Salla – In The Middle of Nowhere

Proudly proclaiming that it is in the middle of nowhere, Salla is truly the place to get away from it all, a destination that has remained undiscovered by most for decades. The vista that opens up from the fell tops is truly unique, with wild untouched nature stretching all the way into Russia. From there, visitors can also see the region’s finest attraction, the well-groomed network of Salla Ski Resort’s slopes.

Salla Ski Resort

Salla has a long history of skiing, in fact the world’s oldest ski was found here, dating back 5,000 years. It also had the distinction of being Finland’s first venue for downhill and slalom competitions back in 1937. Today this compact Salla ski resort features 15 slopes with 6 lifts, ranging in difficulty from “Little Helmet” children’s slopes to high speed world cup slopes. There are also 160 km of cross-country skiing trails at Salla Ski Resort, of which 43 km are illuminated.

Salla Ski Resort has enough variety for everyone. The family slope for beginners and children is located conveniently at the base of the front piste, near the Keloravintola Restaurant. Snowboarders and freeskiers will enjoy the blue runs on the eastern side of the fell and the red runs on the front side, as well as the Snow Park. For more proficient skiers, there are plenty of black runs on the back of the fell, as well as the FIS competition slalom slope, challenging enough to serve as a practice ground for world class alpine skiing teams.

The area around the Keloravintola silver pine log restaurant has a ski slope service building with an equipment hire and service shop, and a Ski School with instruction in all styles of skiing. Under the same roof is the Ski Shop and cafeteria. The lower ski lift station is within walking distance of the ski resort restaurants and numerous accommodation establishments.

Local ingredients and traditions come together in restaurants of Salla for unforgettable meals and gastronomic experiences. Eat like an explorer at the log cabin restaurant Kelo, right on the slope! Or sample local delicacies in a Lapland hut at the Salla Reindeer Farm. Kiela, a Chaîne des Rôtisseurs restaurant, offers world-class dining in the middle of nowhere. Regardless which restaurant, you can be assured of fresh, local ingredients like reindeer, salmon and cucumbers.

Salla offers a variety of accommodation choices to fit your needs: from log cabin suites on the sides of the fells to luxurious apartments by the resort. Even with nature just outside your door, you’re never far from services and convenience.
